Local On-Site Video Storage

An NVR or DVR in your building — no subscription, no upload bandwidth requirement, and complete physical control of your footage.

Local On-Site Storage

The Case for On-Site

No bandwidth constraint — record every camera continuously at full resolution without touching your internet connection. For a facility with thirty 4K cameras, this is often the only practical option.

This is still the right answer for a lot of buildings, particularly where retention requirements are long, resolution is high, or internet upload capacity is limited.

The Risks — And How We Address Them

Being Direct About This

Theft of the Recorder

Mitigation: locate it in a secured space or locked rack, use tamper alerts, and add cloud backup for critical cameras.

Fire and Water Damage

Mitigation: off-site backup of key cameras.

Drive Failure

Mitigation: surveillance-rated drives, RAID configurations, and active health monitoring.

Silent Failure

The most common problem we find on existing systems. Mitigation: system health monitoring with alerts.

Not a Guess

Sizing Storage Properly

We calculate required capacity during design against your stated retention target, spec surveillance-rated drives sized with headroom, and verify actual retention after installation and again at service visits.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my footage be stored?

Whatever you specify and pay for in drive capacity. We calculate it during design and verify it after installation.

Can I view local cameras from my phone?

Yes, through the manufacturer’s secure relay service or a VPN. We don’t achieve it by port forwarding.

What happens when a hard drive fails?

On a RAID system, recording continues and you replace the failed drive. Health monitoring means you’re alerted before it dies.

Should I be worried about the recorder being stolen?

It’s a legitimate risk. Secure the recorder physically, and consider hybrid storage so the important footage exists somewhere else too.

Can I add cloud backup to a local system later?

Often yes, depending on the platform. That’s a hybrid configuration and it’s what we recommend for most buildings.
