Frequently Asked Questions

Can standalone locks be upgraded to networked later?

Some can. Certain Schlage products move from standalone to networked operation with a module change. If you expect to expand, tell us during design.

How long do batteries last?

Commercial standalone locks commonly run one to two years on a set of batteries. Units warn of low battery well before failure, and most include an emergency power option.

Are keypads secure enough?

It depends entirely on code discipline. Credential-based or dual-credential units are stronger than PIN-only. For anything genuinely sensitive, we’d steer you toward a credential.

What about fire code?

Every access-controlled opening has egress requirements. Free egress hardware, fail-safe versus fail-secure behavior, and fire alarm release are specified per opening based on occupancy and local code.

Can standalone and networked doors be mixed on the same building?

Yes — that’s the practical approach for most buildings we work in: networked on perimeter/high-security doors, standalone on interior openings. We’ll walk every opening during the site assessment and tell you which category it falls into.
