Hybrid Video Storage

Record full-resolution video locally. Mirror what matters to the cloud. Get the strengths of both approaches without either one’s primary weakness.

Hybrid Storage

The Problem It Solves

Camera systems fail in exactly two ways: the footage was never usable, or the footage is gone. Local-only storage handles the first problem well and fails badly on the second. Cloud-only handles the second completely but runs into bandwidth limits and cost at long retention.

Hybrid takes the strength of each — full-resolution continuous recording locally, with a compressed stream or event-triggered clips mirrored to the cloud.

Why This Is Usually the Right Answer

The Benefits

Survives Theft

The stolen recorder no longer takes your evidence with it.

Survives Fire, Flood, Drive Failure

The off-site copy is independent of anything happening in your building.

Bandwidth Stays Reasonable

You’re not uploading dozens of continuous 4K streams.

Recording Never Stops

Local recording continues without interruption and syncs when the connection returns.

How We Typically Configure It

Local + Cloud, By Design

Local: every camera, continuous, full resolution, sized for your complete retention requirement.

Cloud: a lower-bitrate parallel stream, or clips triggered by motion, analytics, and alarm events, from the cameras that matter most.

Platforms Supporting Hybrid

Verkada

Effectively hybrid by architecture — each camera stores substantial footage onboard while the cloud handles management.

Eagle Eye Networks

Their bridge appliance records locally and manages cloud upload, purpose-built for this model.

Rhombus

On-camera storage with cloud management and AI analytics.

Digital Watchdog, Hanwha, Axis, IDIS

Traditional recorders with cloud backup and remote access available as an added layer.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hybrid cost more?

More than local-only, less than full cloud at equivalent retention. For most buildings the total lands between the two while delivering better protection than either.

What gets sent to the cloud?

Whatever you specify — commonly event clips from every camera plus continuous lower-bitrate video from critical ones.

What if the internet is down when an incident occurs?

Local recording captures everything as normal. Cloud sync resumes when connectivity returns and uploads the backlog.

Can I convert my existing local system to hybrid?

Often yes, depending on the recorder and cameras. This is one of the more worthwhile upgrades to an existing system.

How much upload bandwidth does hybrid need?

Considerably less than full cloud — often a fraction. We calculate it against your actual connection during design.
